Someone with your knowledge and experience in computers may be better off with a product that does not cause the hassles you are seeing. Interface seems like it's been designed by monkey lemmings. Norton does not "lock down" the HOSTS file.  You can still add anything you want to the HOSTS file.  It does, apparently, include the file in all scans however, regardless of I am not missing the point, I was providing you with a workaround.

ESET is a cleaner and more advanced piece of software. I, nor anyone for that matter, shouldn't need to disable protection at all...
